BIODEFENSE
Michigan can potentially leverage its biotechnology and pharmaceutical capabilities to develop unique biodefense solutions in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics for the federal government.
The Michigan Security Network anticipates high levels of federal spending on nuclear and biological detection systems, as virtually all major procurements in this sector are from federal budgets. Spending will continue on further development of current detection technology programs. However, by far the largest opportunity within biodefense is the research, development and procurement of medical countermeasures to combat biological threat agents, including therapeutics and rapid diagnostics. While key capability gaps exist in decontamination and forensics, these areas offer limited opportunities.

With our state’s capabilities, Michigan can become a center for biodefense research.
